Abstract

The article analyzes an ancient inscription painted on stone (titulus pictus) discovered in 1978 in the area of the Roman legionary camp of Legio I Italica in Novae. The author proposes narrowing the dating of this inscription to the years 177–180 AD, which corresponds to the period of the joint rule of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus. The text presents a new interpretation of the personal data of the officials mentioned therein, arguing, among other things, that the mysterious Roman legate actually belonged to the well-known senatorial Sabucii family.
