Abstract
The scientific article analyzes ancient laws of war and the various methods and legal aspects of repatriating Roman prisoners from the Barbaricum during the Roman Imperial period. The author builds upon the pioneering research of the Polish scholar Jerzy Kolendo, examining the political, economic, and social consequences of the mass abductions of both civilians and Roman soldiers beyond the imperial borders. The text details Roman legal concepts such as ius postliminii and private ransom (redemptio ab hostibus), demonstrating how Roman society and the state addressed the problem of captivity.
