Abstract
The scientific article re-analyzes a rare Roman painted building inscription (titulus pictus) from the fortress of Novae, focusing on its hypothetical reconstruction and the turbulent history of its readings. The author addresses the international debate surrounding the alleged forgery of a photograph of another inscription (from Dacia), which for years served as key evidence in discussions regarding the administrative status of Roman provinces along the Danube. Based on specialized conservation research, the scholar defends the identification of the officials mentioned in the text, rejecting theories about the temporary downgrading of Roman provinces from consular to praetorian rank during the Marcomannic Wars.
